Missouri State Treasurer Eric Schmitt will give a presentation about the Achieving a Better Life (ABLE) Program. ABLE accounts allow individuals with disabilities and their families to save for long-term needs without harming eligibility for federal means-tested public benefits programs such as Medicaid and Social Security. This session will offer an overview of the ABLE program, explain how to open an ABLE account, and discuss various items to consider before opening an ABLE account.

Eric Schmitt was sworn in as the 46th Treasurer of the state of Missouri on January 9, 2017. He was inspired to enter public service to be a voice for his son, Stephen, who was born with a rare genetic condition: tuberous sclerosis complex which causes tumors on his organs. Stephen also has epilepsy and is on the autism spectrum and non-verbal. As chair of the Missouri ABLE Board, Eric launched Missouri’s ABLE program in 2017 with more than 200 individuals with disabilities and families in St. Louis; Stephen Schmitt opened Missouri’s first MO ABLE account. Since then, hundreds of Missouri families have established accounts and begun saving for long term needs. Treasurer Schmitt also serves as the co-chair of the National Association of State Treasurer’s ABLE Committee.
